Language Acquisition_#WhatIlearnedtoday

Some things I learned from Stephen Krashen when talking about Language Acquisition. Stephen D. Krashen is professor emeritus at the University of Southern California. He is a linguist, educational researcher, and political activist. His talk from youtube about language acquisition with the transcript that I make with happyscribe.com.

What I learn from this talk

The most important thing in acquiring language is that we need to ensure that we understand the message given to the reader in an understandable way - the term for it is called "Comprehensible Input."

Example: What is the meaning of this sentence? "猫 有 四只脚。"

(1) Low comprehensible input:

The teacher read and told me this sentence again and asked me to reread it. No matter how many times that person made me read it, I couldn't learn anything.

(2) High Comprehensible input

The language teacher still speaks out loud "猫 有 四只脚" But when the teacher reads the word 猫 - they will draw a cat, then then they circle the cat's four paws and say 四 只 脚, by drawing the cat and point to 4 legs. We can understand and remember.猫 = Cats;四 = 4;脚 = feet

Here is some way to for to make the language more comprehensible

The way I use it in learning languages.

Make reading fun and choose texts that are interesting to me, and that text is not too difficult to read and understand the writing without much interruption. I also use the LingQ app to help shorten the time to look up the dictionary. In this way, the advantages are as follows:

- Feeling interesting when learning a language because I choose texts related to me

- Not only learn the language but also learn knowledge from that text.

- I can understand new words thought other words. And being able to see a new word in many different contexts and sentences helps me know how that word is used in different contexts to understand a word's polygraph.

Some example:

I import data from my favorite youtube videos into the software and learn new words.

The word "acute" can see in various contexts.

#WhatIlearnedtoday is a series of articles sharing what I learned in a day, this knowledge is not the final version, but will always be improved, and updated as I acquire new knowledge.
