Self-understanding through body
The first dance with contact improvisation
On October 3. 2020, I had the first opportunity to go to a contact improvisation dance lesson. A new world opens up before my eyes, a world without logic, a world of body sensation, emotion, and joy.
Let's start with music
Contact improvisation is a form of improvised dancing that has been developing internationally since 1972. It involves the exploration of one's body in relationship to others by using the fundamentals of sharing weight, touch, and movement awareness.
Connect with others using sensations
When I was with someone, logic could lead me in the wrong direction, because while thinking about what I should do in the future, sometimes I would lose connection with my partner.
What I can do is calm down, notice the connection. I should learn to express myself and endure fear and excitement about things that might happen; immerse in moments of impact and accept moments of separation.
Understand by sensations
When I was instructed by a teacher to move my body on my hips, it was a miracle because the first time I noticed my hips. And when my dance partner touches it, we dance together. I can feel my body more deeply and feel the two's energies; we're connected and harmony with each other. I close my eyes, and my senses of perceptions are enlightened.
What I learned
I learned from yesterday that it allows me to have an additional channel to feel about the world - it's feeling by sensations instead of reason. It helps me to connect deeply and get in tune with myself and others. I will spend more time paying attention to and caring for my body.
